shark tooth:
"Carcharodon" megalodon
Miocene, South Carolina, USA
----------------------
The species was described by Agassiz in 1835 under the extinct genus Otodus.
Today, the scientific name of this shark is: Otodus (Megaselachus) megalodon, because it is known that this shark with large triangular teeth is a lineage distinct from that of the modern great white shark Carcharodon carcharias, which also has large triangular teeth adapted to a similar diet (particularly large mammals).
The megalodon lived for 20 million years, from the Early Miocene (-23 Ma) to the Pliocene (-2.5 Ma), in warm waters.
"Meg" teeth are found all over the planet: Europe, Africa, America, Asia, and Oceania.
