Meteorite (Siderite): IAB-MG
Campo del Cielo, Argentina
-----------
Campo del Cielo is a group of iron meteorites discovered 1,000 kilometers northwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina. These meteorites were well known to indigenous peoples for many generations, before Captain de Miraval led the first collecting expedition for the Spanish in 1576. Since then, approximately 100 tons of meteorites have been recovered from Campo del Cielo. Carbon dating of the charred wood found beneath the meteorite fragments indicates that the fall occurred approximately 4,000 to 5,000 years ago.
